This new build terminal building was designed to accommodate larger cruise ships and to allow over 6,000 passengers to disembark and embark within a day. Extending over 100,000 sq ft the two-floor terminal will take the passenger experience to another level with a modern design, curtain wall glazing, lounges, VIP suite and a ship to shore air bridge. Upon completion the terminal will be the UK’s first plug-in shore-side terminal meaning berthed ships will have the ability to power down during their visit.
REIDsteel conducted an extensive value engineering exercise during tender stage where they were able to reduce the peak foundation reactions by a factor of 10. This led to significant savings in both time and money for the client.
Construction comprised a (circa) 700 tonne steel frame structure on piled foundations which supports the roof. The roof is formed of curved 1400mm deep glulam beams at 1500mm centres supporting a timber deck.
The terminal features six bipods at the north side of the building providing a grand entrance. The internal floor area of over 100,000 sq ft includes a 42,500 sq ft mezzanine floor above a 65,000 sq ft baggage handling area. Using our airport expertise, we designed an air bridge to allow direct access from the terminal building to the docked cruise ship, while two ancillary buildings house baggage handling and plant.
