Verification book for CBFEM according to AISC code

In the evolving world of structural engineering, staying on top of innovative design techniques is crucial. The recently published book "Steel Connection Design by Inelastic Analysis" offers a cutting-edge approach to connection design, focusing on the Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM) related to the AISC 360 code.

IDEA StatiCa steel connection design checks have been validated by 10 years of practical use of the software but also thoroughly verified the component-based finite element method (CBFEM), which stands behind the software with numerous comparison calculations. Working closely with several universities across the United States and Europe, we have created and tested numerous verification articles and examples gathered and summarized in this book.

About CBFEM

The component-based finite element method (CBFEM) is a novel approach that provides global behavior and verification of resistance for the design of structural steel connections. This method is essential for fast and practical design and evaluation of connections with varying levels of geometry and complexity.

The CBFEM method is based on the idea that most of the verified and very useful parts of the Component Method should be kept. The weak point of the Component Method – its generality when analyzing stresses of individual components – was replaced by modeling and analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEA).

About the book

Steel Connection Design by Inelastic Analysis is a comprehensive resource on the finite element method in structural steel connection design through verification with AISC 360 provisions.

This book covers the use of the finite element method in structural steel connection design. Verification with AISC 360 provisions is presented, focusing on CBFEM.

Detailed modeling and verification examples with references to AISC and other relevant publications are included throughout the text, along with roughly 250 illustrations to aid in reader comprehension.

Readers of this book will benefit from understanding the basics of structural design.

The book includes information on:

  • T-stub connections, single-plate shear connections, bracket plate connections, beam-over-column connections, and end-plate moment connections
  • Bolted wide flange splice connections, temporary splice connections, and chevron brace connections in a braced frame
  • Beam-column-brace connections and double-angle simple beam-to-column connections
  • Semi-rigid moment connections, covering code design calculations and comparisons, IDEA StatiCa analysis, and ABAQUS analysis

This book is not just an academic exercise—it's a practical guide that will improve the quality and efficiency of your designs, whether you’re an experienced engineer or a student eager to build a strong foundation in the field.
